Does Dry Needling Hurt?

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

Dry needling involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into tight or painful muscles, so it’s natural to wonder if it hurts.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Insertion: You might feel a quick, sharp prick when the needle goes in — similar to a small pinprick.

  • Muscle twitch: Often, the needle causes a brief twitch or cramp in the muscle, which can feel a bit uncomfortable but usually passes quickly.

  • Afterwards: Some people experience mild soreness or tenderness in the treated area for a day or two, similar to after a deep massage.

Conclusion:

Dry needling isn’t usually painful, but it can cause brief discomfort during treatment. Most people find the relief it provides from muscle tightness and pain well worth the temporary sensation.
