What Is Dry Needling and How Does It Work?

Dry needling is a modern therapeutic technique used by physiotherapists and other health professionals to treat muscle pain and tightness. Despite the word "needling," it’s different from acupuncture — dry needling focuses specifically on targeting muscle knots called trigger points

How Does Dry Needling Work?

During a dry needling session, a very thin, sterile needle is inserted directly into a muscle knot or tight band of muscle. The needle doesn’t inject any substance (hence “dry”), but its insertion causes a brief twitch or release in the muscle.

What Happens in Your Body?

The needle:

  • Stimulates the muscle to relax: It triggers a local twitch response that helps release tight muscle fibers.

  • Interrupts pain signals: Needling can reduce the nerve irritation associated with trigger points, which decreases pain.

  • Increases blood flow: The tiny injury caused by the needle promotes local circulation and healing.

  • Releases biochemical substances: These help reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair.

What Does It Feel Like?

You may feel a slight prick or pressure when the needle goes in, followed by a twitch or cramp-like sensation in the muscle. Some soreness or tenderness afterward is normal but usually short-lived.

Why Try Dry Needling?

Dry needling is used to:

  • Relieve persistent muscle pain and stiffness

  • Improve muscle function and range of motion

  • Speed recovery from injuries

  • Reduce headaches and referred pain caused by muscle tension

Conclusion:

Dry needling is a targeted technique that uses fine needles to release tight muscles and reduce pain. It works by triggering a natural healing response in your muscles, helping you move more freely and feel better.
